Parade Participation

Are you interested in being part of the Hats Off Day Parade? Check if your group is eligible.

The festival is a customer-appreciation day and a celebration of our Burnaby Heights community. To keep the focus on highlighting everything our district has to offer, we’re unable to include outside vendors, mobile vendors, food trucks, or non-Heights businesses in the festival or parade.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Heights Business Improvement Area (BIA)’s businesses (that is, merchants from 3700 to 4858 Hastings that are commercial lease-holders and business license holders on the Heights)
  2. Burnaby-based non-profit associations. (Must be Burnaby based, and Burnaby-centric.)
  3. Burnaby elementary and secondary schools (Burnaby Heights and North Burnaby schools will receive priority)
  4. Burnaby Heights community’s places of worship (Boundary to Gamma, north of Frances)
  5. Hats Off Day approved sponsors
  6. Government Agencies that have been approved to be at Hats Off Day (City government, or relevant provincial or federal government agencies)
  7. Non Burnaby-based non-profit associations on a case-by-case basis (for example, groups that are specific to this year’s Hats Off Day’s theme, or a specific cultural group that represents one of the cultures of North Burnaby).
Application opens in February

Parade Etiquette

  • Safety is our priority. Please respect city officials, volunteers, and each other.
  • Stay off the road. Do not enter the roadway at any time during a parade. Under all circumstances, avoid running across the street between parade entries (floats), even if you believe there is enough time to do so. It is extremely unsafe to do this.
  • Stay on the ground. For your own, and everybody else’s safety, please do not climb on trees, lamp posts, and/or street furniture.
  • Keep the pavement clear. Do not throw litter or any other item, or leave debris on the roadway. Doing so is very unsafe for both parade participants and spectators and can cause a serious accident.
  • Please allow those in wheelchairs, small children, and seniors to enjoy front row, curb side viewing.
  • Cheering is encouraged! Give the participants a round of applause as they pass you.
